Good point, it’ll be interesting to watch but I think it’s odds on favourite that Google will class mobile as handheld devices. I think this because they’ve already made it clear that they’re working on two indexes (if that’s the right term) one for mobile and the existing, it gives them a clear route to creating an additional revenue stream, ads for the existing index, ads for the mobile index, double bubble, and as the tablet is a more ad friendly screen size, it would be daft to exclude them, it makes it a more ‘inclusive’ sale from a mobile adwords marketing perspective. I might however be wrong with a capital W. 🙂 I’ll be happy earthier way.

I had that same concern. But here are a few facts:

1. Google defines “mobile” as “smartphones, rather than tablets and feature phones.”

2. Google also says, “Although we do not have specific recommendations for building search engine friendly tablet-optimized websites, there are some tips for building websites that serve desktop, smartphone and tablet users.”

Those two things led me to believe that this is more for mobile / smartphones. Plus, many tablets still render desktop sites just fine.

What’s interesting is that small business owners had to wait for an update, or may possibly continue to do nothing. Your laundry list of FACTS is great – getting a business owner to really care about the impact is the challenge.

I am guessing once the rankings drop or traffic decreases then the reality of the update will hit.

Yes, it will be interesting. The good news is that if your site is not mobile friendly, just check Google Analytics to see which pages get mobile traffic, and then focus on making those specific web pages mobile-friendly first.

How can you assume that? I do not think this will effect much on desktop search.
